Annie Kenney- The Suffragette

Today is the Annie Kenney Day! (At least for me...) She is one of my favourite Suffragettes. From my point of view she is a hero. Previously the suffragettes were a peaceful group. Then Kenney arrived and let me tell you what happened on the 13th of October 1905. On that day Churchill and Edward Grey had an independent labour party meeting. Kenney and her close friend and suffragette, Christabel Pankhurst, interrupted this meeting and shouted at the two men demanding that women should have the right to vote. Neither of them replied So Kenney and Pankhurst took out a banner on which was written "Votes for women" and continued shouting at the two politicians. At one point Churchill and Grey decided to call the police. When a policeman arrived and tried to arrest the two women, they kicked and spat at him. At the end they were charged with assault and fined with five shilling. Kenney and Pankhurst refused to pay so they were sent to prison. In her autobiography "Memories of a Militant" she describes how it was in prison

"Being my first visit to jail, the newness of the life numbed me. I do remember the plank bed, the skilly, the prison clothes. I also remember going to church and sitting next to Christabel, who looked very coy and pretty in her prison cap ... I scarcely ate anything all the time I was in prison, and Christabel told me later that she was glad when she saw the back of me, it worried her to see me looking pale and vacant."

Oh... I almost forgot... For those who live or are south African, HAPPY HUMAN'S RIGHTS DAY!
